Paris Agreement

India has made significant progress in achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The country has successfully reduced its emission intensity by 33% between 2005 and 2019, surpassing its initial target of 33-35% reduction by 2030 ¹. Additionally, India has achieved 43.81% of its cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources, exceeding its goal of 40% by 2030 ¹.

Key Achievements:

  • Renewable Energy Growth: India’s renewable energy capacity has grown by 250% in just five years, making it the world’s fourth-largest renewable energy market ².
  • Solar Power: Solar capacity has increased from 2.63 GigaWatts in 2014 to 36 GigaWatts in 2020 ³.
  • Forest Cover: India aims to expand its forest cover to absorb 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030 ³.

Challenges Ahead:

  • Afforestation and Carbon Sink: India faces uncertainty in achieving its afforestation goals due to inconsistencies in state-level data ³.
  • Renewable Energy Additions: The country needs to prioritize rooftop solar installations to meet its ambitious renewable energy targets ³.
  • Transport-related Emissions: India must address rising transport-related emissions, particularly in the post-pandemic era ³.

Overall, India’s progress under the Paris Agreement is commendable, but the country must continue to address its challenges to ach+ieve its climate goals.
